Mackinaw Island to Beaver Island 9/6/17

We got off the dock around 8:00 AM to head over to Beaver Island for the night.  The winds were brisk and the waves once we passed under the Big Mac bridge were in the 3 foot range and we were again happy to have stabilizers for the trip.  We tied the fridge shut and put breakables on the floor.  Abby and Debbie each had some Dramamine and we were off.  We passed a large tug and tow going in the opposite direction and saw a huge lake freighter off in the distance as we turned south down the channel to thread the shoals before we got to Beaver Island.

Deep water and not much in sight

clear day but a little bouncy

Dramamine is starting to work

It's working now

OK success the crew is asleep

We arrived at Beaver Island Municipal Marina around 3;00 and were greeted by locals who all winter at Fripp Island SC.  We had called on the radio, but got no response from the marina, even tried the phone and left a message.  As it turns out this was the first day of school and the dock-mistress is also a school teacher at the local school.  There are 45 kids total from K1-12 and she is the art teacher for all of them.  Talk about a small school.  She called us later in the day and we checked in for the night.  Beaver Islands claim is that its like stepping back in time, very similar to Tangier Island in the Chesapeake.  There are cars and the Main Rd is paved, but the side streets are all dirt and the vehicles are all very dirty from driving on them.  We took the bikes down and rode from one end of town to the other. Things are wrapping up here for the summer and we were just about alone on the docks.  Debbie took some pictures of the local history.
